Wang Yi Speaks with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu on the Phone

On December 14, 2020, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu at the latter's request.

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu congratulated China on its successful containment of COVID-19, and highly appreciated the achievements China has made in vaccine development. He said that based on the trust in the safety and effectiveness of China's vaccines, Turkey has announced to purchase COVID-19 vaccines from China for emergency use and is ready to enhance cooperation with China in this regard. Turkey hopes to take the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Turkey-China diplomatic relations next year to deepen cooperation and improve the bilateral relations with China.

Wang Yi said that since the beginning of this year, China and Turkey have worked together to fight against the pandemic, and undertaken fruitful cooperation on medical supplies, experience sharing and phase 3 clinical trial of COVID-19 vaccines. When the second wave of the pandemic is raging around the world, China is ready to stand firmly with the Turkish people till they finally defeat the virus. Turkey's decision to purchase vaccines from China has revealed its trust in China. China will provide necessary assistance to Turkey in accordance with laws and regulations. Both countries need to solemnly commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-Turkey diplomatic relations and deepen mutual political trust and all-round cooperation, pushing the China-Turkey relations to a new level.

Wang Yi said that mutual political trust is the basis of the China-Turkey strategic partnership. The two heads of state have exchanged views on it for multiple times and highlighted the importance of mutual understanding and support on issues involving their core interests and major concerns. China and Turkey share common concerns over counter-terrorism and safeguarding national security and stability. Both sides need to oppose the acts of politicalizing counter-terrorism and treating it as a convenient tool, and the application of "double standards" in counter-terrorism. The Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) is an international terrorist organization designated by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Cracking down on the ETIM is the international obligation of all countries. China stands ready to deepen counter-terrorism cooperation with Turkey.

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said that as a victim of terrorism itself, Turkey opposes terrorism in all its forms and the politicization of counter-terrorism. Turkey will strictly abide by the UNSC's resolutions which designated international terrorist organizations, and will not allow anyone to undermine China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
