German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier Met with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi

On 1 September local time, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany met with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was on an official visit to Germany, in the Presidential Palace in Berlin. The two had a very friendly conversation.

President Steinmeier asked Wang to convey his greetings to President Xi Jinping. He stressed that Germany highly values its relations with China, and stands ready to sustain a closer, more enduring bond with China, which is particularly necessary given the delicate international situation now. He reaffirmed Germany's commitment to the one-China principle, as well as to upholding multilateralism on international affairs. Germany does not approve of the so-called "decoupling" and does not want to see a world in division and confrontation.

Wang conveyed President Xi's greetings to President Steinmeier. He noted that with COVID-19 containment becoming the new normal for the world, a visit by the Chinese foreign minister to Germany and other European countries speaks volumes for China's commitment to and expectations for relations with Germany and with Europe. China will continue to work with Germany and the European side to set the stage for the important agenda for the near future.

Wang called on both sides to enhance international cooperation against COVID-19, including on the development and deployment of vaccines, with the aim of defeating the virus at an early date. He urged concerted efforts to champion and practice multilateralism on the international arena, oppose acts of unilateralism and bullying, uphold the basic norms of international relations, and safeguard international fairness and justice.

Steinmeier and Wang also had an in-depth exchange of views on the international situation, China-Germany cooperation and a wide range of other issues of shared interest.
