|Wang Yi Puts Forward Four Proposals for Advocating and Practicing Multilateralism|
On August 29, 2020 local time, in his talks with Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian of France in Paris, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed, the greatest consensus reached with all countries during this trip to Europe is to adhere to multilateralism. Multilateralism is the foundation for most countries, especially for small and medium-sized countries to survive and develop. At present, unilateralism is on the rise as some countries ignore international agreements and refuse to fulfill their international obligations. Without multilateralism, the multilateral mechanism and international order established since World War II will be seriously destroyed, and small and medium-sized countries will be greatly impacted. In this regard, China and France, as responsible major countries, should actively advocate and practice multilateralism.
First, adhering to the concept of multilateralism. Both sides should actively advocate multilateralism on various occasions, resist unilateralism, and make multilateralism the consensus of the international community.
Second, taking multilateral action. The Chinese side supports the French side to continue to play a leading role in tackling climate change. The Chinese side has met the 2020 emission reduction target ahead of schedule and is actively studying the plan for next step. The two sides should support each other in holding the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Kunming and the World Conservation Congress in Marseille next year.
Third, abiding by multilateral agreements. Unilateral acts, such as withdrawing from international organizations and violation of international agreements, will not gain any support. China and France should strengthen coordination and cooperation in international affairs and safeguard important achievements of international agreements and multilateral diplomacy such as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear issue.
Fourth, strengthening multilateral institutions. The United Nations is the most important platform for supporting and practicing multilateralism. Both sides should support the United Nations in playing its due central role in international affairs.
